From the moment we first recorded the instrumentals with the flowing piano and the intermittent jungle breaks, we knew that we had to get Harrison in on this.

Get “Brink” on iTunes!

Rob and Harrison go way back. Having lived near each other in their youths, their careers in music have mingled at various junctures (Rob was involved in the production of several of Groundation’s Albums among other things). Even so, it was a surprise and a thrill to have this opportunity to work on a Deepfried concoction with the illustrious Professor.

Harrison met up with us over at Broken Radio where we proceeded to scale the building to hit the roof for an optimal perspective as we passed the spliff and shot the shit. Laughs ensued and soon we found ourselves at the console flipping the safety and dropping the bomb as The Professor stepped up to the mic to sing his soul into a song. Rob and I fell to the floor as our small studio launched us into orbit. There was a period where the gravity was insurmountable, soon overcome by the drop of a beat and the bounce in The Professor’s feet, feeling the rhythm, finding the groove, hitting a stride, making his move.

Thank you Harrison for gracing our mix with your guiding voice.

The lyric writing process was particularly interesting as we started with “I want you to be satisfied. I want you to be happy with you.” After remixing the song, I wrote a bunch of lyrics that were really more from the perspective of the second person and was then faced with making a bridge back to the first person. “That’s when I turn to the people who’ve earned the right to offer up an insight, and I might just sing along to their loving song…” The protagonist conjures the perspective of his supporters to wield the force of love.

It’s also a peppy song that makes me sing in my car.

In our 2010 Gadgetbox sessions, there was one session where Jade and Ryan were in the big room banging on some keys and making some crazy noises. I was in the mixing room and decided to just grab a random sample of the noise without any regard for rhythm and loop it to a beat. Gabe dropped some arpeggio on it and presto, we have lift off! Proving yet again that just as you can carve a masterpiece out of an otherwise average piece of granite, it is possible to make great music out of random sounds and noises.

Honestly, we accidentally started this loop in C# which made it extremely difficult to jam to this. But the song had good bones and thanks to a string of serendipitous events in the remixing process this thing came out pretty well. Especially when Crystal came home at 10:30 and busted out the Melodica.

I miss you Rob. I used a custom Logic Audio synth patch to do the bass. I’m stoked on how that part came out but really, there’s no substitute for Rob’s bass riffs.

The lyrics / cover art are following the theme…. what would it be like to talk to yourself when you were a kid? Do you think you would even listen to yourself?

Again, we had the great pleasure of working with the string section from Audiafauna in Gadgetbox Studios. In particular, check out Andrew’s ethereal stand up bass harmonics in the very beginning of the track.

At some point we also experimented with making a mix with Kennedy’s 1962 speech announcing plans to visit the moon. In any case, it is on account of that experiment that we arrived at the cover art for this song. It’s pretty amazing to imagine setting foot on the moon.

I added the bass line and some of the drums after the fact, but otherwise this is straight from their living room. We called it “Something About Indonesia” because Lindsey sang something about Indonesia . I’m thinking that one thing that might help in these impromptu sessions is some sort of method for rapidly writing lyrics… like maybe I could come prepared with a list of topics, or a few rhyming chorus lines… Hmm… thinking about it…
