Understand

UnderstandKoht called me last Tuesday and said we should play music. Honestly, we accidentally started this loop in C# which made it extremely difficult to jam to this. But the song had good bones and thanks to a string of serendipitous events in the remixing process this thing came out pretty well. Especially when Crystal came home at 10:30 and busted out the Melodica.

I miss you Rob. I used a custom Logic Audio synth patch to do the bass. I’m stoked on how that part came out but really, there’s no substitute for Rob’s bass riffs.

The lyrics / cover art are following the theme…. what would it be like to talk to yourself when you were a kid? Do you think you would even listen to yourself?

Strive

This month we’re excited to announce one of our favorite songs of the year: STRIVE. Again, we had the great pleasure of working with the string section from Audiafauna in Gadgetbox Studios.  In particular, check out Andrew’s ethereal stand up bass harmonics in the very beginning of the track.

At some point we also experimented with making a mix with Kennedy’s 1962 speech announcing plans to visit the moon. In any case, it is on account of that experiment that we arrived at the cover art for this song. It’s pretty amazing to imagine setting foot on the moon.

Something About Indonesia

Something About IndonesiaAnother song from our jam session with Peter Koht and Crystal Birns on New Years Eve.

I added the bass line and some of the drums after the fact, but otherwise this is straight from their living room. We called it “Something About Indonesia” because Lindsey sang something about Indonesia :). I’m thinking that one thing that might help in these impromptu sessions is some sort of method for rapidly writing lyrics… like maybe I could come prepared with a list of topics, or a few rhyming chorus lines… Hmm… thinking about it…

Old Back in the New Year

Old Back in the New YearHappy New Years!!!

Peter Koht and Crystal Birns invited me and Lindsey to their house to play some tunes with them on New Years Eve.

Koht started with a Tom Waits riff. We lucked out and picked a solid drum loop on the first try. Sadly Rob was not available to join us so we had to pump up the guitar to lay down a bass track.

The old back in the new year motif came somewhere between the new years champagne and the Vicodin I took for my back :)

After The Curtain

After the CurtainPeter Koht came out and jammed with us. He played a cover of Beirut’s “After the Curtain” which came out beautifully. When we did our Gadgetbox sessions, the string section from Audiafauna laid some tracks down and really tied it together.

Corporeal Safari

We lucked out and had the San Francisco studio to ourselves on a Saturday night. Can’t beat a grand piano and a heap of top notch recording gear!

The name Corporeal Safari speaks to the sensual quality to the song. While mixing it, I imagined a journey of touch and sensitivity.

Live at Pergs

We played at Pergs and came out with a pretty fun set of tunes. Bummer that rob couldn’t make it and lay down his notorious bass lines. I hat to sub for him with a keyboard. Bob and Lindsey carried the guitar and vocals. David Schulkin threw down some ukulele riffs.

T.H.A.T.E.O.T.R.

The House at the End of the Road (T.H.A.T.E.O.T.R.) is a unique album in both sentiment and mood. The overall structure and method is based in classic studio style recording techniques. Being that the emphasis is on recording, this album is sonically clean, delivering a heavily premeditated musical landscape. Read the Good Times’ Review.
